These studies were originally written for my own use as well as for my students. They are not orchestral studies, but studies for technical perfection. They deal with technical difficulties encountered in the horn literature: virtuoso finger and tongue action, intervals, stopped tones, rhythm and condition.

This edition, like the original 19th century collection, is meant for mutual playing for fun and entertainmet in the first place, but it contains some more "serious" compositions as well. Due to different degrees of difficulty, the quartets are well suitable for first exercises in ensemble playing.

Musikverlag Bruno Uetz, BU 1220, ISMN M-50146-166-0
Josef Suttner (1881-1974) wrote these studies as an introduction to the operas of Richard Wagner. Rather than being orchestral studies in the narrow sense of the word, they are intended to acquaint the horn player with the challenges presented by Wagner's works. During my 45 years in the orchestra as a solo hornist, I have been correcting parts of the studies and making major additions.

Edition Schott, COR 15, ISMN M-001-13851-2
Franz Strauss (1822-1905) was one of the major 19th century horn players. For more than 40 years, he was principal horn player at the Bavarian court and played in first performances of some of Wagner's operas. Also, he worked as a teacher and composer; his compositions are kept in the Strauss family archive. Strauss's compilation Quartetten für vier Hörner (Quartets for four horns) contains both his own compositions as well as arrangements of famous songs, arias and chamber music. The manusripts (all undated) show that Strauss revised his compositions several times. The present edition, initiated by the Strauss family, exclusively contains original compositions by F. Strauss.
